Allotment holdings have evolved through a rich and varied history of social and economic change, the most notable being the 2nd World War where the public were encouraged to 'Grow their own Greens' and 'Dig for Victory'.

Allotments fell out of fashion for a while but have recently become more popular and many now have long waiting lists, however, they are still an option worth exploring if you are keen to grow.

Many allotment sites now have communal allotments you can work on, or if they don't, it is often possible to start by helping others on their allotments (try putting up a note on your local allotments gate offering to help out or share).
