FareShare Greater Manchester Volunteer Van Driver

To support the safe and secure redistribution of surplus food to Community Food  Members (CFM) across Greater Manchester.

Key Tasks

  • Sign in
  • To agree the route for the day
  • To carry out mechanical and safety checks on the van, using the daily van checklist and including van internal temperature report any defects to supervisor / manager and fill in the Daily Van Check sheet including temperature before the round
  • To carry out the picking and labelling of food orders
  • To assist with loading food orders onto the van ensuring orders are positioned safely and in the correct order.
  • To drive to each CFM location accompanied by a volunteer delivery assistant and deliver the orders of Ambient /Chilled /Frozen foods.
  • To ensure that for each delivery the Delivery Note is completed and signed by the authorised CFM including note of any item changes for each delivery and note any changes
  • To make any additional food collections and deliveries as instructed
  • To return the van to FareShare and ensure it is unloaded
  • To clean the van and sign Cleaning Schedule
  • To file the completed and signed Delivery Notes and report any item changes to the Warehouse Supervisor/Office Assistant
  • Sign out


The volunteer will operate from the FareShare depot in New Smithfield Market, Manchester making deliveries locally and across Greater Manchester.

  • Interest in the work of FareShare and our values
  • All drivers will need to have a clean driving licence
  • All drivers need to be over the age of 25 years
  • Recent driving experience (within the past 3 months)
  • Experience of Manchester area would be useful but not essential.


Expenses incurred travelling to and from FareShare will be reimbursed up to £5.60 per day. For those volunteering for more than 4 hours a day lunch expenses will be reimbursed up to £3.00. You will be shown how to claim expenses on your induction.
